Robert “Bob” McMullen
Robert “Bob” McMullen
October 13, 1946 – October 4, 2026
Robert “Bob” McMullen passed away at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto from complications of lymphoma and brain lesions, just days before his 80th birthday.
Bob was a man of many talents and a few contradictions: handsome, charismatic and always fun, yet deeply private. “Never-Miss” McMullen was a natural, multi-sport athlete who played with NHL Hall of Famers and led his university team in scoring as a defenseman. He had all the skills, just never the aggression.
Beyond sports, Bob was drawn to business. After a short but promising corporate career, he joined his father and brothers in the family business. Bob was the guiding force behind Summerhill Market, an award-winning Toronto grocery institution in business since 1954. Humble and understated, he never relented on his nonnegotiables: exceptional service, innovative products and respect for everyone.
Bob is survived by his spouse Joan; his children Greg (Joanne), Christy (Geoffrey) and Brad (Candra); his stepsons Michael and Andrew (Kasie); and his grandchildren Bridget, Burke and Caleigh. He is also survived by his brother Wayne (Sandy), sister Glenda and brother Don, along with nieces Jen (Patrick), Karen and Corry, and nephew Cam. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and June, and his brother Barry.
Family and friends will fondly remember time at the cottage and on the golf course, and a vibrant gentleman who was always in motion. Mostly, we will miss Bob being “Baub.”
The family is deeply grateful to the excellent staff at Southlake Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital and Huntsville District Memorial Hospital. Their care teams did their absolute best under challenging circumstances.
