BURNABY, BC: On Wednesday, July 17, 288 golfers came out in support of the 18th annual Buy-Low Foods Golf Classic at Surrey’s Northview Golf & Country Club and raised $70,000 for Variety – The Children’s Charity.
“Our partners and suppliers are very important to us, and the Golf Classic is our way of saying ‘thank-you’ to them for another great year of business,” says Albert Lum, Director of Merchandising at Buy-Low. “It’s thanks to these strong relationships that we are able to continue supporting Variety, which has been our charity of choice for over 30 years.”
Variety provides funding support to families in British Columbia with children who have special needs. In 2013, Variety helped over 1,200 families and 32 organizations across the province by helping to cover the costs of medical equipment, therapies and specialized programs. Families say that Variety’s support significantly reduces the stress they experience when faced with unexpected medical expenses, allowing them to focus entirely on their child’s needs.
“It takes determination and dedication to make a difference and we appreciate Buy-Low’s commitment to Variety over so many years,” says Bernice Scholten, executive director of Variety. “Buy-Low is part of our team, standing with us as we celebrate each child’s little victory over their individual challenges.”
As well as this annual golf classic, Buy-Low also supports Variety in a number of different ways throughout the year: The annual Picnic in the Park, Boat for Hope barbeque, Gold Hearts campaign and the Variety Market and Auction. Overall, Buy-Low’s support, in cash donations, volunteer hours and gifts-in-kind, represents close to $3 million for Variety.
