Both CFIG and the Small Business Coalition have been working vigorously on the issue of credit card fees as part of the review of transaction fees that was ordered by Finance Minister Bill Morneau. In March, the Bank of Canada will release a report that provides comparative information and data about other jurisdictions around the world and how fees are regulated or not, in those countries. The recent settlement between Visa and Walmart underscores the lack of fairness in the payments system between large scale merchants and small business.
One measure that the government is contemplating is to reduce or eliminate tariffs for goods purchased by Canadians from on-line American retailers. CFIG is opposing such a move and a copy of our letter to the Minister of Finance is available on our website.
CFIG has been pushing the Ontario government for additional remedies for grocery, particularly smaller operators, in the area of high energy costs. The government is promising some action in the very near future.
