CFIA Announces Fall 2026 Import Control Measures for California Romaine Lettuce

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued an Industry Notice through MyCFIA to Safe Food for Canadians licence holders outlining import control measures for romaine lettuce originating from California this fall.

When the measures apply

The controls will be in effect from September 24 to December 17, 2026.

What importers need to do

Canadian importers have two options this season:

1. Provide a certificate of analysis for E. coli O157:H7 with each shipment of romaine lettuce, or
2. New for 2026 — provide proof that their supplier participates in the Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement (LGMA) Romaine Test & Learn Program.

Importers should also note that the CFIA has removed the requirement to upload supporting documents as part of the import declaration.

The CFIA is notifying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of these measures.
